Verner Soler

At the age of twenty-two, I traveled to Los Angeles with a six month visa in my pocket. I didn’t know at the time that I was immigrating from the small village of Vrin in the Swiss Alps, but 6 months turned into 22 years. Throughout these two decades, I returned home for a visit nearly every year, in order to maintain a relationship with my loved ones. During these visits, I witnessed my family age incrementally, most noticeably the young and the elderly. Young children change so much they are barely recognizable on my next visit. On the other end, witnessing my parents (now in their eighties) aging that way has been an unmistakable reminder of our mortality and of the limited time we have left together.
